Unit 8 - Creating our Show reel and preparing for our End of Year Showcase
3 Show Reel Analysis:

For this section, I must analyse 3 show reels in the film department of my choice: for example, cinematography, filmmaking, editing, etc. Personally, I want to go into post-production, so I am going to analyse 3 editing show reels to gain inspiration from on how to set it out, and what of my personal projects can be used effectively.
Show reel 1:

EDITOR SHOWREEL - Benoit LEPRESTRE - YouTube

This show reel is trying to promote Benoit’s skills to potential future clients with this 1 minute 25 second show reel. He is also trying to sell himself and show his personality while proving his skills and techniques, so clients get to know him as a person. This show reel also allows him to show the projects he has worked on, his qualifications, and the software he is fluent in.

He uses quick captions to present himself and his work in time with the music and sound effects which set the pace. All these characteristics are intertwined which allows the show reel to flow smoothly and feel in time with one another. I find that the music and the quick cuts make the video feel bouncy and fun, minimising the informality and it adds a personalised feel to the show reel. He uses the entertaining, playful captions to show his techniques as the captions are introduced differently, whether it’s a zoom in, zoom out, slide across the screen, green screen or another technique.

I believe this show reel is effective as it presents not only the talented work that he is able to provide, but it also presents himself as a hard worker due to his qualifications and multiple software abilities. I believe the show reel is jampacked with multiple different skills and techniques which allows future and potential clients to really understand Benoit’s talents and capabilities. However, some captions are too quick, while he’s trying to show off his skills with captioning, which could make the inaccessible to some viewers.

Showreel 2:

Premiere pro showreel | Video Editing showreel - YouTube

This show reel is quite different to the one we previous looked at. Vignesh Waran uses examples to present his skills and techniques rather than subtly including them while introducing himself. This video seems less personal and more advertised towards clients looking for a quick editor with basic and advanced skills. This show reel is trying to attract new viewers and clients to his channel and business.

He uses different examples to present his techniques such as colour correction, he uses a picture, then colour corrects it, making sure to label before and after so the viewer can distinguish the changes easily. This is the same concept for every single technique he is presenting himself to have. He also uses upbeat music to give the video atmosphere and subtle sound effects to go with the transitions to make it less informal.

This show reel is effective as it is a quick and simple way to prove what skills can be provided for an editing service. However, compared to the other example, it is less personalised and more technical, which could push clients away.
Show reel 3:

Sarah Olivant creates almost a story with her show reel. This show reel’s purpose is to show off all her hard work from the past year and to hopefully push herself forward for publicity to potentially attract new and future clients.
She has a short introduction including multiple clips from different projects, showing some colour corrected shots. It then goes into her projects that she has completed over that past year and smartly puts the music video first so that can be the background music for the rest of the clips. Sarah makes sure to put the title of the project, the genre and what her role was on the project. The clips fit with the music to make it flow smoothly and the pace fits the music.
This show reel is effective as it shows her previous experience with projects and that she is a trusted editor for multiple people. It also shows her skills, techniques and the variety of genres she works with. This allows clients to understand what she can work with. However, I think Sarah could’ve used more techniques in the show reel to show off her skills rather than just use old projects and state her role.
